What a beautiful pothole!

Chicago’s cold winters leave the city’s streets riddled with potholes. Instead of whining about the issue, Jim Bachor has his own way of fighting it – by creating neat mosaics inside potholes.

Inspired to create mosaics by his past trips to Italy’s ancient ruins, the artist started to address the issue of potholes by using them as a base for his Murano glass mosaics in 2013. Though he says that “mosaics are one of the few techniques that can really survive,” they may be lost in this case if they are made too large or if they are covered up with pothole-patching materials.
