You should hire a professional paving and installation company like U.S. Pave for asphalt driveway installation and repairs. Installing new asphalt where there has never been any is complex and expensive. Still, unless you need significant repairs to an asphalt driveway with sinking slopes, waving, big potholes and crumbling curbs, you could DIY cracking and sealcoating if you have the time and tools.
We also provide many other asphalt-related services, such as catch basin and concrete installs and repairs, sealcoating, striping and signage.
Installing a New Asphalt Driveway
Installing a new asphalt driveway where there has never been one before is a complicated and expensive undertaking. However, we have the knowledge and experience to make it less expensive than other installers. Plus, we’ll do it right the first time, so it will require less maintenance, give you fewer problems and provide you with an excellent driveway surface for years to come.
First, we’ll level the driveway area, add eight to ten inches of gravel and prepare the surface if it is unstable with geotextile fabric netting and drainpipes when necessary. We’ll also add a soil sterilizer beneath the gravel. That will kill weeds and ensure a stable subsurface or footing for the asphalt pavement.
Then, we’ll apply two layers of asphalt. A base layer with ½ to ¾ inch gravels stones 2 ½ to 3 inches thick. The topcoat or top layer will use 3/8-inch gravel stones to 1 ½ inches thick. The total asphalt will be no less than three inches thick.
The thickness will often depend on the material used. We could use hot-mixed asphalt, acrylic polymer with colors, asphalt with pattern stamps or chip seal.
Repairing an Asphalt Driveway
For cracks in an asphalt driveway, use some weed killer in the cracks and then fill ½ inch cracks with ¼ inch of sand and the rest with a quality driveway crack filler or Quikrete® Blacktop Repair.
You can fill holes and cracks of one or two inches with Tamp and Set Patch or Trowel and Spread Patch. For the bigger holes, fill the hole to within four inches of the top with gravel and then add Super Patch. Use a 4×4-inch beam or tamping pin to tamp everything down as you go.
If your asphalt driveway is waving or crumbling, you should have a professional look at it before you decide to replace it. U.S. Pave can add drainage and curbs to stabilize it, make necessary repairs and resurface an asphalt driveway. When you don’t have the time, tools or know-how, call the professionals at U.S. Pave for assistance.
